The Market in the Sky —— Exploring the Space Station from Alien Awakening

Humans have been trying to explore the unknown, and the satellites, space shuttles, space probes, etc. we launched have gradually formed a lively street in the sky.

On May 19th, another space-related film was released in the mainland. In the film, an extremely important tool — — International space station. In this space station, astronauts discovered mysterious samples of Mars, which triggered a series of thrilling stories.

The space station is a manned spacecraft that flies around a fixed orbit for astronauts to visit and live in space many times. The International Space Station is the largest manned spacecraft ever built. It was jointly completed by 15 countries (including five space agencies including the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan and Europe). Dr Rudy Schmidt, the consultant of the European Space Agency, was invited to help with the filming of the space station and the problems encountered in space.

It is worth noting that among these 15 countries, there is no China. However, China has a small experimental space station Tiangong-1 designed and built independently, which appeared in the film before.

Structure of Space Station: Taking the International Space Station as an Example

The space station has always maintained diversity. One is the construction of different countries, and the other is that astronauts also come from different countries. In Alien Awakening, we can also see katerina golovkin, a Russian commander, played by Olga Dykhovichnaya, Hideo Murakami, a Japanese system engineer, Miranda North, a quarantine officer of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, played by Rebecca Ferguson, Hugh Delhi, a microbiologist played by Arian Bakri, from Britain, David Jordan, a station medical officer, from the United States, and Rory Adams, a flight engineer played by ryan reynolds.

Another diversity comes from its structural parts, and the parts assembled into the space station also come from different countries. Before 2000, the Mir space station in Russia was used all the time. After that, the Mir space station was abandoned and the gradually assembled International Space Station was used.

The structure adopted by the International Space Station is a truss-suspended cabin, and the truss is a welded structural object that we often see in the indoor open space of large shopping malls to build small stages. The structure of the space station is completed by the truss attached to each cabin. At present, the International Space Station includes 13 important cabins, which are sent into space one by one by the space shuttle. The International Space Station costs $200 billion, and more than 100 people have lived here so far.

At present, the International Space Station is composed of Russian multi-functional modules and American trusses, which is roughly in the shape of a cross from our intuitive visual effects. In Alien Awakening, you can also see the lens aimed at the International Space Station.

Watching the movie Alien Awakening, we will notice that there are many cabins with different names. For the International Space Station, several important cabins include: Star Service Module, Dawn Working Module, Unity Node Module, Harmony Node Module, Destiny Experimental Module, Serenity Node Module, Columbus Space Experimental Module and Japan Hope Experimental Module. Besides the cabin, we can also see the truss structure and the solar wing.

A xingchen service cabin

Star service module was sent to space after Unity node module and Discovery cargo module. It includes four parts: transition room, workshop, transition room and assembly room. The Star docked with the Dawn module. In Alien Awakening, when the Soyuz thrust pushed the space station to the earth, it destroyed a module, including the Star service module.

The Star service module consists of three sealed modules, namely, transition module, living module and working module, and an unsealed module for holding fuel barrels, engines and communication antennas. In the Star service cabin, there is a central computer, life support system and propeller device to control the operation of the space station. There is a separate "room" for astronauts to take a bath and sleep in the living cabin. There is a kitchen with a refrigerator, a dining table and sports equipment for astronauts to exercise. Star has four docking ports, which can be used to receive manned spacecraft or cargo spacecraft. Star service module is the second stage of space station construction to ensure the residence of three people in the station.

B Shuguang working module

Dawn module is the first assembly module sent into space. There is a pressurized compartment and a docking system in the Dawning working cabin. Its docking system can be used for docking Soyuz spacecraft and Progress spacecraft. In the second half of Alien Awakening, the astronauts thought that the spaceship that came to rescue them was Soyuz. The cabin where Hugh Delhi’s leg was finally swallowed by Calvin was the Dawn.

The pressurized compartment in Dawning can meet the needs of life support, command and data processing, power and docking. The environmental control and life support system is completed by circulating nitrogen and oxygen through electrolyzed water equipment. At the same time, this system can also control circulating fans, heat converters, fire detection equipment and so on. In Alien Awakening, Miranda broke the capsule at a critical moment in order to throw Calvin out of outer space to save Murakami’s life. This operation was aimed at Dawn.

C unity node module

Unity node module is the first of three connecting modules in the space station, and it is also the second module to be launched. The node cabin is generally used to store the equipment necessary for running the space station. It is connected to the destiny experimental module and the dawn working module, and the node module of serenity is connected to the left. In addition to the above functions, the Unity node module also undertakes the power distribution task of Dawning and the data processing service of connecting with Dawning computer. It carries two multiplexers to run application software.

Node module and dome module of D&E serenity

Serenity appeared in Alien Awakening for a long time. When connecting with the earth to seek the different names of Mars, David Jordan and Miranda North on the space station were competing in the space triathlon, and David Jordan was exhausted on the treadmill. They are in the node module of Serenity.

Connected above the node module of Serenity is the dome module, which is the cabin with one side all transparent in our impression and can see the beautiful scenery of the earth. In Alien Awakening, when the commander carried out spacewalk to repair the communication system, the cabin where David Jordan and Hugh Delhi were located and the cabin where David Jordan and Miranda North finally decided to leave the escape cabin were all in the dome cabin.

　

The quiet cabin is located on the left side of the Unity node cabin, and the dome cabin is its permanent attachment cabin. The tasks undertaken by the quiet cabin include water distribution for the space shuttle fuel cell, transfer of drinking water and treated urine. The dome cabin can not only see the panoramic view of the earth, but also facilitate the astronauts to observe the actions of the remote control manipulator and other astronauts with the naked eye.

F seeker airlock

The airlock of Discovery is also an important scene in Alien Awakening. In the scene where the commander was entangled in Calvin’s spacewalk and finally died in space, slowly away from the space station, David Jordan’s perspective was to seek the airlock cabin. In the International Space Station, the Discovery airlock is mainly built for astronauts to walk in space. It is connected to the Unity node module.

G destiny experimental module

Destiny experimental module is made in America, and it is the most expensive part in the space station. There are six experimental modules on the space station, which is the most important one, but the important experimental module in Alien Awakening is not this one. Its interior is rectangular, which can accommodate 24 scientific equipment and instruments.

H harmony node cabin

Harmony node module connects three important experimental modules — — Destiny experimental module, Columbus space experimental module and Japan hope experimental module, and the remaining docking ports are used to dock the supply modules of the United States and Japan. It is opposite to the airlock cabin of Discovery, and its function is coordinated with the adjacent compression chamber, which is convenient for the movement of people and goods.

I Columbus space experiment module

　

Columbus Space Experimental Module is the smallest experimental module on the space station, which includes a pressure module with a cylindrical hull with two welded cones. Columbus experimental module includes biology laboratory, fluid science laboratory and European physiology module facilities. Judging from the comparison of the scene settings in Alien Awakening, the most important scene of cultivating different kinds of Mars and ryan reynolds films should take place in this experimental cabin.

J Japan hope experimental module

Japan’s Hope experimental module consists of three parts: the logistics storage room, the laboratory, the mechanical arm and the extravehicular experimental platform. They will be launched on the American space shuttle and assembled in the space station.

K Canada 2 remote control manipulator

The robotic arm that appeared at the beginning of Alien Awakening

Canada 2, a remote manipulator, has high flexibility and heavy load. The remote control manipulator is mainly to simplify the mechanical activities of astronauts outside space. At the beginning of Alien Awakening, the Mars probe Pilgrim crashed into space debris, went out of its original orbit and will collide with the International Space Station. Ryan reynolds took a spacewalk to catch the Pilgrim and its subsequent movements, and the remote control manipulator played a great role.

Escape capsule

There are two escape pods in Alien Awakening, and each escape pod can only be used by one person. But there are six astronauts in the space station in the film, and this design was put forward by Miranda North, the character of Rebecca Ferguson in the film. In the real international space station, the escape capsule is located on the Soyuz spacecraft.

Of course, the International Space Station has more than these cabins, besides which there are Discovery experimental module, Dawn experimental module, Dock docking module and various replenishment modules. The Ssangyong skeleton structure formed by the International Space Station, two sections of the truss made in the United States are connected with four solar wings, that is, solar panels, which are the energy source of the whole work.

The International Space Station is expected to be retired from service in 2024-2028, and China is the best relay country at present. The design of China Space Station includes five modules: core module, experimental module I, experimental module II, manned spacecraft and cargo spacecraft.
